John N. Maxfield married MARY ANN CROCKER at DeKalb County, Illinois, on 1 June 1847 (Ill M). They had secured their marriage license on 28 May previous (M. Maxfield). Mary Ann was born at New York about 1828 (Elmwood Cem, 1850, 1860 censuses). After marriage they settled on the family homestead in Sycamore, DeKalb County, his parents becoming part of his household.

John Nelson and family were reported at Sycamore in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses. The 1860 census (173:49-50) reported them as follows:

The household also included an unrelated housekeeper and farm laborer.

Mary Ann Maxfield died in 1865 (Elmwood Cem, DeKalb Album says 12 April 1867).

John Nelson married as his second wife REBECCA (HOSFORD) BOULBY at Crawford County, Ohio, on 21 October 1866 (Oh M). Rebecca Hosford was born at Ohio about 1838/9 (1880 census). She had previously married a man surnamed BOULBY some time before 1860. She brought one child from this previous marriage into the Maxfield home.

John Nelson Maxfield died on 23 January 1873 (Elmwood Cem; DeKalb Album 671).

Widow Rebecca Maxfield was reported living at Galion, Crawford County, Ohio, in the 1880 census (1004:553C) as follows:

"Forrist H. Boultz" is Forest H. Boulby; "Flora B. Boultz" is Flora Belle Maxfield.

Rebecca Maxfield died at Galion, Crawford County, Ohio, on 4 April 1893 (OH D).

John Nelson Maxfield and his first wife Mary Ann Crocker had the following children:
