JAMES GARDNER6 MAXFIELD (Stephen5, Amos4, perhaps Joseph3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Nashua, New Hampshire, on 22 July 1838 (F), a child of Stephen Clough Maxfield and his wife Clarissa Staples. James G. Maxfield married SARAH E. ATKINSON at Lowell, Massachusetts, on 14 June 1860 (VR Ma 136:108:14), recorded as follows:
James G. Maxfield of Lowell, 22, medical student, b. Nashua NH to Stephen C. and Clarissa, 1st;
Sarah E. Atkinson of Lawrence, 21, b. Sandwich, NH to Johnson P. and Sabrina, 1st;

James G. Maxfield was a medical student from 1860 to 1865. His schooling was interrupted by service in the military in the Civil War, from 31 August 1862 to 3 June 1863 (MSSMCW 1:422):
James G. Maxfield, Sergeant, Lowell, student, 24, enlisted Aug 25, 1862, mustered Aug 31, mustered out Jun 3, 1863, 6th Regt. Mass. Vol. Infantry
After receiving a medical degree from Harvard Medical School, James G. Maxfield was a physician for ten years in Michigan, surgeon's steward on the U.S. Navy gunboat Osceola, then surgeon at the Soldiers Home, Togus, Maine.

The 1870 Census reported Doctor Maxfield and family at Clyde Township, Rugby Post Office, Saint Clair County, Michigan (698:1:114A):

Widow Sarah Maxfield was still living in 1921 (F).

James Gardner Maxfield and his wife Sarah E. Atkinson had the following child:
