MATTHEW NATHANIEL6 MAXFIELD (Richard5, probably Benjamin4, Joseph3-2 John1) was born at Tully Township, Marion County, Ohio, on 26 December 1847 (Ferguson, year confirmed by cemetery record, state by census records), a child of Richard Maxfield and Elizabeth Coon his wife.

Matthew served in the Army in the Civil War and after from 1864 to 1866 (Civ War):

The 1870 census (682:1:585A) reported Matthew Maxfield living in the household of William and Almina Powell at Cedar Springs Post Office, Spencer Township, Kent County, Michigan. Matthew was 22 years old, born in Ohio, working as an engineer in a saw mill. William Powell was proprietor of a saw mill.

Matthew Maxfield married ALICE LUCRETIA SPRAGUE (Mich 28:35) about 1874/5 (1910 census; 1880/1 according to 1900 census). Alice was born in Michigan on 4 February 1856 (Ferguson; February 1859 in 1900 census; 1856/7 in 1920 census).

The 1890 Veterans' Schedule (1890 Vet) reported Mathew Maxfield of Montcalm Township and County, Michigan, a Private in Company B, Third Michigan Infantry, 28 August 1864 to 25 May 1865, had an injury to the right eye.

The 1900 census (723:2:244) reported this family at Spencer Township, Kent County, Michigan:

This record also reported that Alice had ten children, all still living.

The 1910 census (665:2:10A) reported this family at Belvidere Township, Montcalm County, Michigan. Mathew, 62, was a general farmer. His wife Alice was 53. This was their first marriage, they were married 35 years, and Alice had ten children, all living. Other members of the household, all single and born in Michigan, included: James S., 32, lumberman; Frank E. 27, laborer in the woods; M. L., 21, laborer on the home farm; Lois M., 17; Mathew, 15; and Albert, 12.

The 1920 census (787:1A) reported Matthew and Alice Maxfield at Belvidere Township, Montcalm County, Michigan. Sons Albert and Jim were at home, engaged in farming, as was their father.

Matthew Maxfield died in 1930 (Vinewood Cem). The 1930 census (1013:8A) reported widow Alice Maxfield living at Belvidere Township, Montcalm county, with single son Frank, age 44, and widowed daughter Gertrude Holland, age 54.

Alice died in 1940 (Vinewood Cem).
