Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JONES6 MAXFIELD (perhaps Joseph5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born in New Hampshire about 1813 (1810-15 in 1830 Census, 1812/3 in 1870, 1880 censuses, 1813/4 in 1850 Census). His parentage has not been proven. Because his first name was Jones, I speculate that he could have been a grandchild of Eliphalet Maxfield and Lydia Jones. A review of the census records for the sons of Eliphalet in 1820 and 1830 indicated that Joseph had a son not otherwise accounted for, born in this time period. So it is possible that Jones Maxfield could be a child of Joseph Maxfield.

Jones Maxfield married, probably some time before 1834, his first wife. They were reported in the 1840 Census (151:203) in Palmyra, Somerset County, Maine:

age male female
5-9 0 1
20-29 1 1
50-59 0 1

This described Jones Maxfield, his wife, their daughter, and an unidentified older woman.

Jones Maxfield married as his second wife MARTHA ANN DAVIS some time before the 1850 Census. Martha was only slightly older than Jones' daughter by his first wife. Martha was born at Maine about 1831 (1830/1 in 1880 Census, 1831/2 in 1850, 1870 censuses). The family was reported in Detroit, Somerset County, Maine in the 1850 Census (268:21) as follows:

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Jones Maxfield 36 M laborer NH
Martha A. Maxfield 18 F ME
Eliza J. Maxfield 15 F ME school
Eben F. Junkins 14 M ME school

The 1860 census (445:) reported "James" and Martha Maxfield, a family of two, at Stetson, Penobscot county, Maine. James, probably our Jones, a farmer, age 47, was born at New Hampshire. Martha, age 28, was born at Maine.

The Jones Maxfield family was reported in LaGrange, East Bradford Post Office, Penobscot County, Maine, in the 1870 Census (554:1:142B):

The 1880 Census (485:53B) report of this family, in Stetson, Maine, more clearly defined relationships:

Jones Maxfield died before the 1900 census (593:2:24A) which reported Martha Maxfield, a widow, living with her daughter's family at 26 Child Street, Augusta, Maine:

According to this record, Martha had thre children, one of whom was living. David and Mary had been married fifteen years.

The 1910 census (544:3:195B) reported Martha N. Maxfield, 76, widow, living alone on Etna Road, Stetson, Maine. Of her three children, none were still living.
