Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation
THOMAS6 MAXFIELD (Jacob5, Eliphalet4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New Hampshire about 1821 according to census records (1819/20 in 1850 Census; 1820/1 in 1860, 1880 censuses; 1821/2 in 1870 Census). The death record of his son George gave Thomas' birth place as Sandwich, New Hampshire. I have no proof of Thomas' ancestry at this time. However, the location of his birth points to his being a grandchild or great grandchild of Eliphalet Maxfield and Lydia Jones, the first Maxfields to settle in Sandwich, and ancestors of all the Maxfields of Sandwich whose ancestry has been traced. It can not be proven how Thomas is descended from Eliphalet. However, as Thomas and Josiah Maxfield were both born in Sandwich, both had moved to Salem, Massachusetts by 1850, and Josiah and a son of Thomas later moved to Maine, one suspects that they are related--perhaps brothers. On the basis of this speculation I conjecture that Thomas Maxfield could be a child of Jacob Maxfield and his wife Rachel Griffin.
SUSAN T. VINCENT of Salem, Massachusetts, married Thomas Maxfield at Salem on 27 December 1841 (VR Salem 4:76). Susan was born in Massachusetts in August 1822 (1900 Census; 1820/1 in 1850 Census; 1821/2 in 1860, 1880 censuses; 1822/3 in 1870 Census).
Their first child was born at New Hampshire, but the next four children, born from 1845 to 1857, were born at Salem, Massachusetts ,and the last two were born in the 1860s at Maine. Thomas was called a laborer at the birth of a child in 1845, watchman in the 1850 Census, a carpenter in the birth record of a child in 1851, laborer at the birth of a child in 1855, a miller in the 1860 Census, and a farmer in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.
