BETSY WINSLOW BUTLER married James Quimby Maxfield as his first wife, at Mount Vernon on 21 June 1826 (D. Pierson; NMGR 8:19--names). Betsy was born at Mount Vernon on 10 June 1806 (D. Pierson). She died there on 27 February 1833 (NMGR 8:20), age 26 years and 8 months.
MARY HOWLAND BUTLER became the second wife of James Quimby Maxfield at Mount Vernon on 1 January 1834 (D. Pierson). She was born about 1808/9 based on her age at death. She died on 8 March 1836 (NMGR 8:20), age 27 years.
ELVIRA FOSTER became the third wife of James Quimby Maxfield at Mount Vernon on 3 July 1836 (D. Pierson). Elvira was born on 17 November 1806 (NMGR 8:20), a child of Richard and Clarissa Harlow (Barton) Foster. The James Maxfield family was reported in Skowhegan, Maine, in the 1840 Census (151:160), consisting of a male and female in their 30s, two males and a female between 10 and 15, and a male under 5. This corresponds precisely to the composition of this family as best as we have been able to determine it. Elvira (Foster) Maxfield died on 8 March 1848 (NMGR 8:20).
SARAH JANE BROWN became James Quimby Maxfield's fourth wife at Mount Vernon on 18 June 1848 (D. Pierson). Sarah was born at Maine in 1825 (NE Cems).

The 1860 Census (447:) reported this family at Corinna, Penobscot County, Maine. The family consisted of James Maxfield, 56, farmer, Sarah J. Maxfield, 35, Benjamin H. Maxfield, 6, James D. Maxfield, 22, miller, and Sylvia S. Maxfield, 19. Sylvia was the wife of James D. Maxfield.

James Quimby Maxfield died at Saint Albans on 28 July 1872 (NMGR 8:19). His widow Sarah Jane died in 1908, and was buried at Bean Cemetery, Mount Vernon (NE Cems).
