of Salisbury, Massachusetts

JOHN H.6 MAXFIELD (Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Georgia, Vermont, about 1817 (or Fairfax, Vermont; towns from birth records of children; 1817/8 in 1850 census, 1816/7 in 1860, 1880 censuses), a child of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. I speculate that John is son of Henry based on census information, age and location.

Probably sometime before they began having children about 1845, John H. Maxfield married MARY H. STEARNS. She was born at Corinth, Vermont, about 1818/9 (place from birth record of children; years from 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses).

John H. Maxfield was called a farmer and currier in the 1850 census. Other censuses and birth records of children call him farmer or tanner.

The 1850 census (Chittenden Co., 181) reported this family in Westford, Vermont, consisting of John, 32, farmer and currier, Mary 31, and Edward, 4, in school, all born at Vermont.

The 1860 census (1321:169) reported tha family at Fairfax, Vermont, consisting of John H., 43, farmer, Mary W., 41, Edward, 14, in school, and Edna, 9, in school.

John H. Maxfield served in the Army in the Civil War for over a year, and received a disability discharge (Civ War):

I do not find John and Mary Maxfield in the 1870 census, however daughter Edna Maxfield (1620:1:173A) was reported at Fairfax, in household of Stillman and Cordelia Pierce. Edna was 18, working as a servant, and still in school.

The 1880 census (1344:71B) reported the family at Fairfax as follows:

      • mother Mary Maxfield b. Corinth res Fairfax; father John Maxfield b. Fairfax, farmer
