Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

SANFORD6 MAXFIELD (probably Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Georgia, Vermont, about 1812/3 (1812/3 VT in 1850 census, 1810/1 VT in 1880 census, town from child's birth record), probably a child of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. Sanford's parentage has not yet been proven by me, but is suggested by census records, age, and location.

Sanford Maxfield married HANNAH MOREHOUSE about 1845. Her last name is indicated by the presence of relatives of that surname in the same household in several censuses. Hannah was born at Essex, Vermont, on November 1824 (town from child's birth record, month and year from 1900 census; 1823/4 in 1880 census). She was a daughter of Homer and Lucinda Morehouse.

The 1850 census (Chittenden Co., 179) reported this family in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont. It consisted of Stanford, 37, a farmer, Hannah, 25, Jeanette, 4, and Hannah Holmes, 69, all born at Vermont.

The 1860 census (1319:611,654) reported this family twice, at Westford (Sanford, 47, blacksmith, Hannah, 35, Heman, 4, and Ellen M., 12), and at Milton, Vermont (Sanford, 45, day laborer, Hannah, 40, and Heman, 3). Ellen was probably a niece, the daughter of Rimmon.

The 1870 census did not report Sanford, but reported Hannah Maxfield (1618:1:726B-727A), age 45, and Lucy, age 8, in the town of Westford, Essex Junction Post Office. The immediate previous household was apparently Hannah's parents, Homer and Lucinda Morehouse, with Homer Maxfield, age 14. "Homer Maxfield" was probably Heman Maxfield, son of Sanford and Hannah.

The 1880 census (1343:337D) reported this family in Westford. It is unusual, in that it lists Hannah as the head of the household, and Stanford as her husband. Hannah was 56, Stanford 69. A third member of the household was Hannah's mother, Lucinda Morehouse, now a widow, age 77. All three of these persons, and all their parents, were born in Vermont.

The 1900 census (1691:1:75A) reported Hannah Maxfield at Milton as follows:

Hannah Maxfield is listed above as married, not widowed, but their in no mention of Sanford. Hannah had been married for 54 years, and reported two children, both living. Elisha and Lucy had been married for 20 years, and reported two children, one living.

I have no further information on Sanford and Hannah Maxfield, and do not know when or where they died.
