Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation
JAMES HARVEY6 MAXFIELD (William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Fairfax, Vermont, on 29 January 1797 (Sebern, year in cemetery rec), a child of William Maxfield and his wife Abigail Belcher. He was called "Harvey" in most records. He served in the War of 1812, a provate in Captain Josiah Grout's company of Vermont militia (W 1812 Pens).
James Harvey Maxfield married SOPHIA INGERSOLL at Westford, Vermont, on 6 October 1816 (her death notice). She was born at Middletown, Connecticut, on 8 June 1800 (her death notice). The 1820 Census (127:188) reported the Harvey Maxfield family at Fairfax, Vermont, consisting of a man and a woman between 16 and 26, and a boy and a girl under 10. One person was engaged in agriculture.
The Harvey Maxfield family moved west. The 1830 census reported them at Mount Vernon, Ohio, where his brother Gilbert settled. From 1840 through 1860 the censuses reported them at Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois, where his brother John lived. In 1870 they were reported in Taylor County, Iowa, where son Albert lived. From the birth places of their children we can deduce that the Harvey Maxfield family remained in Vermont until 1824, moved to Ohio sometime between 1824 and 1827, and moved from Ohio to Illinois after 1834 but before the 1840 census.
The Land Records of Fairfax, Vermont, indicate that Harvey Maxfield had land there, and after moving west made a return trip to dispose of it:
- 10 October 1820 - Harvey Maxfield of Fairfax, purchased from Edward Thurston of Fairfax the farm formerly of Phinehas Page, not disposed by Joseph Beeman, tax collector, for $100; registered 10 Jun 1822 (Fairfax Deeds 7:277)
- 28 May 1825 - Harvey Maxfield of Fairfax sold to Lyman Brooks of Fairfax, part of former farm of Phinehas Page and owned by heirs of William Maxfield, for $100, 28 May 1825. On 10 Mar 1831 Harry Maxfield (brother of Harvey) of Franklin County bought from Lyman Brooks of Saint Armand, Lower Canada, land in Fairfax, part of former farm of Phinehas Page and owned by heirs of William Maxfield, for $100. Perhaps this was a mortgage which Harvey's brother paid after Harvey moved west. (Fairfax Deeds 8:259)
- 26 June 1832 - Harvey Maxfield of Mount Vernon, Knox county, Ohio, sold to his brother Harry Maxfield of Fairfax, part of land belonging to William and Abigail Maxfield, both deceased, for $50 (Fairfax Deeds 9:386)
- 29 September 1836 - Harvey Maxfield personally appeared to dispose of the above property (Fairfax Deeds 9:386)
The listing of persons in the family by sex and age group in the 1830 and 1840 censuses corresponds approximately to the family members indicated below. However each census indicates only one female in the age group that should include both Elizabeth and Clarissa. The 1850 census (104:388B) reported the family at Sycamore as follows:
