Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation
WILLIAM6 MAXFIELD (William5, David4, probably Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at New Hampshire on 10 March 1787 (from death record), a child of William Maxfield and his wife Abigail Belcher.
William Maxfield married SOPHIA ________ probably some time before 1812. Sophia was born on 8 March 1794, based on her age at death.
William and Sophia were affiliated with the Baptist Church in Fairfax, Vermont. William was excluded from membership on 8 December 1810, and restored on 14 March 1817 (Bapt Fairfax 4:33). Sophia was later excluded from membership on 24 June 1832 (Bapt Fairfax 4:37).
William Maxfield was reported in every federal census from 1820 to 1850 as resident in Fairfax. The reporting of persons by sex and age group generally coincides with the information on children below, except that the 1820 census reported an additional male ages 10-15, and the 1840 census reported a female in her 70s, but did not include child Emily. William Maxfield was a farmer.
The land records of Fairfax report William Maxfield involved in several transactions:
- 8 October 1910 - William Maxfield, Jun. of Fairfax purchased from Warrin Barlow of Fairfax "farm on which I [Barlow] now live" for $450 (Fairfax Deeds 6:19).
- 20 October 1815 - William Maxfield, Jr., of Fairfax, sold to John O. Hunt of Fairfax land for $25 (Fairfax Deeds 4:452), and to Joseph Hunt 30 acres for $350 (Fairfax Deeds 4:454).
- 30 August 1823 - William Maxfield of Fairfax purchased from his siblings land in Fairfax for $100 (Fairfax Deeds 8:196).
- 5 January 1824 - William Maxfield of Fairfax sold to Isaac Tichenor of Bennington land for $300, perhaps a mortgage, as Isaac Tichinor of Bennington sold to William Maxfield land for $225 on 12 May 1823, registered 5 Jan 1824 (Fairfax Deeds 7:340).
- 15 March 1830 - William Maxfield of Fairfax purchased from Zerah Lamb of Fletcher land for $184 (Fairfax Deeds 8:197).
- 29 March 1830 - William Maxfield of Fairfax sold to his brother Harry Maxfield of Fairfax land for $100 (Fairfax Deeds 8:238-39).
- 13 July 1832 - William Maxfield of Fairfax received from Jacob Maxfield of Milton a mortgage on land in Fairfax which William sold to Jacob for $200 (Fairfax Deeds 8:319). [NOTE: perhaps Jacob is son of William's Uncle Isaac.]
- 14 September 1842 - William Maxfield of Fairfax sold to his son Samuel Maxfield of Fairfax 6 acres (Fairfax Deeds 10:512).
Sophia Maxfield died at Fairfax on 13 September 1840, age 46 years, 6 months and 5 days, wife of William Maxfield. She was buried at Sanderson Corners Cemetery (VR Vt).
William Maxfield married as his second wife MERCY (PRINDLE) WHITTEMORE at Fairfield, Vermont, on 11 January 1841 (GR 108:84). Mercy was born in Vermont about 1802 (1801/2 in 1850 census, 1802/3 in 1860 census). She married RICHARD WHITTEMORE at Fairfield on 4 March 1822 (GR 108:84). He was born about 1789 and died at Fairfield in 1840 (GR 108:84).
The 1850 census (944:122B), reported the William Maxfield family at Fairfax as follows:

William Maxfield died at Fairfax on 18 March 1860 (VR Vt; Bapt Fairfax 4:127), from typhoid fever.
Mercy Maxfield appeared in the 1860 census (1321:182) at Fairfax, age 57, a household of one, followed immediately by her step-grandson Gilbert B. Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth. She died at Fairfax on 7 September 1863 (VT VR).
William Maxfield and his first wife Sophia had the following children:
- PASCAL7 MAXFIELD b. at Fairfax on 3 July 1812
- SAMUEL7 MAXFIELD b. at Fairfax on 16 September 1816
- ELVIRA7 MAXFIELD
- b. at Fairfax on 27 May 1817 (VR Vt; VR Fairfax)

- m. at Stowe, VT, on 8 February 1844 DANIEL G. BAILEY (VR Vt)
- WILLIAM7 MAXFIELD, Jr.
- b. at Fairfax on 19 April 1831 (VR Vt; VR Fairfax)
The 1840 census implies William was still in his father's home. I have no certain evidence of his existence beyond that. The 1850 Census reported a William Mansfield, 21, born at Vermont, miner, still attending school, at Palcerville, El Dorade County, California. A William Maxfield registered to vote at Los Angeles, California, on 30 September 1868. He was a farmer, born at Vermont, age 36. The 1870 Census reported a William Matfield, at Los Angeles, He was a teamster, age 40, born at Vermont. Perhaps some or all of these refer to this William Maxfield.
- EMILY7 MAXFIELD
- b. at Vermont about 1833/4 (1850 census) (described as idiotic)
