Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JAMES I.6 MAXFIELD (Warren5, Timothy4-3-2, John1), a child of Warren Maxfield and his wife Ruby Peckham, was born probably in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, about 1821/2, according to his marriage record and the 1850 Census.

James Maxfield married LOUISA J. TRIPP at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on 4 December 1844 (VR NB 2:365). The details of the marriage were recorded as follows:

James I. (int. J.) Maxfield, single, age 22, mason, of New Bedford (int. Fairhaven), son of Warren and Rebecca,
and Louise I. (int. J.) Tripp, 19, tailoress, of Fairhaven (int. New Bedford), daughter of Pardon and Sarah F.,
married Dec 4, 1844 in New Bedford.

Louisa was born in Massachusetts some time around February 1826 (1900 Census, but her age as given on various censuses and records varies quite a bit). James was called a mason on both his marriage record and the 1850 Census.

The James Maxfield family was recorded in two places in the 1850 Census (308:212B; 309:360A.), in both Fairhaven and New Bedford. Here is the New Bedford record:

The Fairhaven record follows:

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other

James Maxfield probably died before 1855, as he appears in neither the 1855 state census nor in the 1860 federal census. The 1855 Census (MA Cen 1855) reported Louisa and her two sons at Fairhaven with her parents:

The 1860 Census (492:263) found Louisa Maxfield and her two children living in Taunton, Massachusetts, with Ezra Carroll, 31, painter, Parah, 28, 2 children, and Fred Tripp, 22, painter. The Maxfields in the household were recorded as follows:

Louise was living with her son Charles at Worcester at the time of the 1870 census, and with her son James at East Providence in 1880 and 1900. She died at East Providence on 19 September 1902 (RI D).
