Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation
BENJAMIN6 MAXFIELD (possibly Warren5, Timothy4-3-2 John1) was born in Massachusetts on 29 July 1812, according to his age in his death notice. I have not determined with certainty his parentage. He was most likely the child of Warren Maxfield and his wife Ruby Peckham for the following reasons:
- Benjamin F. Maxfield (1835-1915), who, according to his marriage and death records was a child of Benjamin and Mary Maxfield born at New Bedford, was resident with Ephraim Maxfield, a son of Warren and Ruby, in the 1850, 1855, 1860 and 1870 censuses.
- Mary M. Maxfield, probably the daughter of Benjamin and Mary, in the 1855 census was living with Mary "Polly" Maxfield, the sister of Warren Maxfield.
- The 1820 and 1830 census records indicate a male child in the age group of Benjamin, and none other has been identified.
Benjamin Maxfield of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and MARY LaMUNYON KING of Tiverton, Rhode Island, published their intentions of marriage at New Bedford on 22 September 1834 (VR NB 2:365). Mary King was born in Rhode Island about November 1810 (1900 census). Her parents were Stephen and Phebe L. King.
Benjamin Maxfield was called a "mason" in records from 1843 through 1847.
The 1840 census (178:405) reported this family in New Bedford:

The 1855 Massachusetts State census (MA Cen 1855) also reported Benjamin Maxfield at New Bedford. The family consisted of Benjamin Maxfield, 42, mason, Mary L. Maxfield, 44, George B Maxfield, 20, rigger, Mary M Maxfield, 18, Phebe A Maxfield, 11, Charles H Maxfield, 10, and Sarah E Maxfield, 8.
By 1860 Benjamin and his son George had moved to California, while Mary remained at New Bedford. That year the census (72:833) reported Benjamin Maxfield, age 40, born in Massachusetts, living at Foster Barr Township, Yuba County, California, engaged in mining. That same census (6:542) reported Mary L. Maxfield, age 50, living at New Bedford, with children Phebe A., 17, Charles H., 15, and Sarah E., 13.
The New Bedford Mercury reported the death of Benjamin Maxfield, formerly of New Bedford, in California, on 7 April 1866, age 53 years, 8 months and 9 days (NB Merc D 936).
The 1870 Census (605:1:69A) reported Mary L. Maxfield in the household of her daughter and son-in-law at New Bedford:
