Jonathan Maxfield was a butcher of Dartmouth in the 1850 Census, a laborer in the 1860 census, a "hostler" in 1870, and a gardner in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880.
The 1840 Census (178:316) reported the Jonathan Maxfield family at Dartmouth, consisting of a male-female couple in their 30s, a young woman between 10 and 15, and a boy under five. This would fit the information we have on the family except that they placed daughter Lucy in an older category than she belonged.

The 1855 Massachusetts Census reported the family at Dartmouth (MA Cen 1855) consisting of Jonathan Maxfield, 46, a butcher, Delila C., 54, Lucy P., 23, Abram R., 18, a laborer, and a six month old male infant. This infant would be Lucy's baby.
In 1860 the Jonathan Maxfield family of Dartmouth was recorded as follows (492:868):

After listing Jonathan, his wife and his two children, the Census then listed his daughter's son, his sister-in-law and his brother.
The 1870 Census (603:1:117B) reported Jonathan and Delia in Dartmouth, North Dartmouth Post Office, with daughter Lucy, dressmaker, and her son Edgar, in school. The 1880 Census (525:236D) reported Jonathan, Delida and Lucy, dressmaker, in New Bedford, with 13 year old Nora Tripp.
Delida died at 41 Arch Street, New Bedford, on 14 August 1888 (Rural Cem NB I-48). According to the vital records (VR Ma 391:156:494):
New Bedford, Aug 14, 1888: Delida Maxfield (Jonathan) "Snell", female, married, age 87 y, apoplexy, res+d new Bedford, b. Fall River to George and Olive, both b. Fall RiverShe was buried at Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, on 16 August (Rural Cem NB I-48). Jonathan died about a year later, at 41 Arch Street, New Bedford, on 3 August 1889 (Rural Cem NB I-48). The vital record (VR Ma 400:102:509) gave details:
New Bedford, Aug 3, 1889: Jonathan Maxfield, male, widowed, age 80-6-28, senile gangrene, res+d New Bedford, laborer, b. North Dartmouth to Abraham and Sylvia, both b. North DartmouthHe was buried at Rural Cemetery August 5.
