Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

JONATHAN6 MAXFIELD (Abraham5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on 5 January 1810 (VR Dart 1:158), son of Abraham Russell Maxfield and his wife Sylvia Tucker. Jonathan Maxfield's marriage to DELIDA SNELL, recorded at Dartmouth, occurred on 12 February 1832. They had published their marriage intentions at Dartmouth on 22 January 1832. They both resided in Dartmouth (VR Dart 2:313). Delida was born at Fall River, Massachusetts in 1801, a child of George and Olive Snell (VR NB 1:323; VR Ma 391:156:494). She was sometimes called "Delia" or "Delila."

Jonathan Maxfield was a butcher of Dartmouth in the 1850 Census, a laborer in the 1860 census, a "hostler" in 1870, and a gardner in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880.

The 1840 Census (178:316) reported the Jonathan Maxfield family at Dartmouth, consisting of a male-female couple in their 30s, a young woman between 10 and 15, and a boy under five. This would fit the information we have on the family except that they placed daughter Lucy in an older category than she belonged.

The 1850 Census follows (309:438A):

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Jonathan Maxfield 40 M butcher $600 Mass
Deliah Maxfield 48 F Mass
Lucy S. Maxfield 16 F Mass
Abraham R. Maxfield 13 M Mass school

The 1855 Massachusetts Census reported the family at Dartmouth (MA Cen 1855) consisting of Jonathan Maxfield, 46, a butcher, Delila C., 54, Lucy P., 23, Abram R., 18, a laborer, and a six month old male infant. This infant would be Lucy's baby.

In 1860 the Jonathan Maxfield family of Dartmouth was recorded as follows (492:868):

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
Jonathan Maxfield 51 M laborer $4000 $200 Mass

Abraham R. Maxfield 23 M laborer Mass

After listing Jonathan, his wife and his two children, the Census then listed his daughter's son, his sister-in-law and his brother.

The 1870 Census (603:1:117B) reported Jonathan and Delia in Dartmouth, North Dartmouth Post Office, with daughter Lucy, dressmaker, and her son Edgar, in school. The 1880 Census (525:236D) reported Jonathan, Delida and Lucy, dressmaker, in New Bedford, with 13 year old Nora Tripp.

Delida died at 41 Arch Street, New Bedford, on 14 August 1888 (Rural Cem NB I-48). According to the vital records (VR Ma 391:156:494):
