EDMUND6 MAXFIELD (Zadock5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1)
was born at Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on 10 November 1806 (VR Dart 1:157), son of Zadock Maxfield (son of Edmund) and Susanna Soule his wife. Edmund was a minor when his father died, and Seth Russell was appointed guardian (BCP 59:243-244).
Edmund married CATHERINE F. CLARK, at New Bedford on 4 January 1838 (VR NB 2:365). They both lived in New Bedford at that time. She was born in New Bedford, according to her daughter's 1849 birth record, in 1818/9, according to her age at death.
He was called "Captain" in a child's birth record in 1841; "master mariner" in 1844; "mariner" in 1846 and 1849, "sailor" in the 1850 Census, "master mariner" again in the 1860 Census, and "merchant" on his 1876 death record. They lived at 207 Purchase Street, New Bedford (birth records of children, 1846, 1849, 1860).
The Edmund Maxfield family was reported in New Bedford in the 1840 Census (178:432) with the parents and their first child in their correct age groups, and also a female age 15-19.

The 1855 Massachusetts State Census (MA Cen 1855) reported the family at New Bedford, consisting of Edmund, 48, mariner, Cathrine, 35, Edmund, 13, and Ann, 5. Two children named Henry had died, and one named Catherine. As there is no further record of Mary, she may also have died.

The 1870 Census (605:1:97A) reported Edmund and Ida still at home with their parents. Edmund Senior was credited with a personal estate of $75,000 and real estate of $7000. Edmund Junior was engineer of a steamer.
Captain Edmund Maxfield died at New Bedford on 3 August 1876 (VR Ma 283:123; Oak Gr Cem H-4). The death record noted:

His age was 69 years, 8 months and 22 days according to the cemetery record (Oak Gr Cem H-4). He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, New Bedford.
Widow Catherine Maxfield was reported in New Bedford in the 1880 Census (525:79D), living with son Edmund, called an engineer, daughter Ida, and sister Adeline Davis.
Widow Catharine Maxfield died at 81 State Street, New Bedford, on 29 September 1898, age 79 years (Oak Gr Cem H-4). She was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery on 3 October 1898.
