Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation
RUSSELL6 MAXFIELD (Zadock5, Edmund4, Timothy3-2, John1) was born at Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on 5 October 1802 (VR Dart 1:159), son of Zadock Maxfield (son of Edmund) and his wife Susanna Soule. Russell was still a minor when his father died, and Seth Russell was appointed guardian (BCP 59:243-244).
Captain Russell Maxfield married HANNAH R. SAWYER, at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on 21 September 1830 (VR NB 2:366). At that time they were both residents of New Bedford. Hannah was born at New Bedford on 5 November 1807 (based on age at death NB Merc D 564). Hannah was a child of William T. Sawyer of Tiverton, Rhode Island. This is confirmed from an abstract of his will of 7 December 1833, proven on 3 June 1837:
William T. Sawyer, cordwainer, mentions wife Rebecca; sons Andrew, Gideon T., Thomas, George; daughters Priscilla Cannon wife of Edward Cannon, Hannah R. Maxfield wife of Russell Maxfield, and Mary Ann Maxfield wife of James Maxfield "Tiverton Probate," RIGR 10:101
The 1840 Census (178:426) mentioned a Russell Maxfield household in New Bedford consisting of one male and one female ages 30-39. It is a mystery why the three living sons were not mentioned.
Hannah (Sawyer) Maxfield died at New Bedford on 21 January 1848, of consumption, age 40 years, 2 months and 16 days (VR NB 3:114; NB Merc D 564; Oak Gr Cem H-3).
Russell Maxfield was called a "master mariner" at the time of his daughter's birth in 1843, "sailor" in the 1850 Census, "mariner" in the birth records of children in 1850 and 1852, "merchant" in the 1855 state census, "master mariner" again in the 1860 Census, mariner in 1865, no occupation in 1870, and laborer in the city common in 1880. He lived at 80 Maxfield Street, New Bedford at the time of his death.
At some time after his first wife's death in 1848, and before the 1850 Census, Russell Maxfield married MARY A. CLUNY. This second wife was born at Dartmouth on 17 December 1829, to Patrick and Sarah Cluny (death record).
The Russell Maxfield family of New Bedford was recorded in the 1850 Census as follows (309:332A):
