NATHAN HURD5 MAXFIELD (Currier4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born at Fishersfield, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 5 August 1812[1] a son of Currier Maxfield and his wife Mary Carr. He died at Newport, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, on 22 December 1889.[2] He married at Goshen, Sullivan County, on 1 March 1838 LEMIRA C. CUTTS.[3] She was born at Goshen on 8 May 1816, a daughter of Charles and Abigail (Hurd) Cutts.[4] She died at Newport, on 16 March 1884.[5]
Nathan spent his early childhood at Fishersfield, the fifth of nine children. By the time he was eleven his family had moved to Goshen, where his parents and he farmed for the rest of their lives. Nathan was one of three brothers (David, Page and himself) who married three sisters (Thankful, Abigail and Lemira Cutts).
In July 1842 Nathan was appointed Captain in the 31st regiment, 5th company infantry of the New Hampshire militia.[6]
The Nathan Maxfield family was reported in the 1840 census at Goshen, consisting of a man and a woman in their 20s (Nathan, 27, Lemira, 24), a girl between 10 and 14 (unidentified) and a girl under 5 (Lestina, 0).[7] Lestina died the following year.
Census records for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 all record Nathan at Goshen, a farmer, with the ages of family members as follows:[8]
| Name | 1850 | 1860 | 1870 | 1880 |
| Nathan | 39 | 48 | 59 | 68 |
| Lemira | 34 | 44 | 54 | 64 |
| Henry | 8 | 17 | ||
| Charles | 2 | 12 | 22 | |
| Ella | 6 | 16 |
Nathan and Lemira moved to the larger nearby community of Newport some time after 1880. Of their children, Charles married in 1877 and died in 1882, without children; Henry married first in 1869 and died in 1883, leaving three children by his first wife. Lemira died on 16 March 1884 at Newport. The following week, on 25 March 1884, Nathan wrote his will, remembering his only surviving child, and the children of his deceased son.. His will follows:[9]

Son Charles Albert Maxfield had married Elizabeth "Lizzie" George. He worked as a blacksmith in Newport, where they were reported in the 1880 census.[10] He died from typhoid fever at the age of 33.[11] Not leaving a will, his widow was appointed administratrix; the estate was insolvent.[12] Two years later Lizzie remarried.
Nathan and Lemira are buried at North Goshen Cemetery;[13] Ella and her husband John Johnson are buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Newport.[14]
