EZEKIEL CARR5 MAXFIELD (John4, Joshua3, Joseph2, John1) was born sometime between 1790 and 1800, say 1792 a son of John Maxfield and his wife Molly Carr. He died probably before the 1820 census. He married at Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont, on 12 January 1814 ELVIRA RISBY.[1] She was born at Gill, Hampshire County (later Franklin County), Massachusetts, on 31 August 1796.[2] She died probably before her second husband remarried in 1833. Elvira married as her second husband at Waterbury on 8 April 1821 JOSHUA W. RAND.[3] He married as his second wife at Stowe, Washington County (later Lamoille County), Vermont, on 8 September 1833 ELIZA ATKINS.[4]
Robert Bremer has done much research on this family. In the Hillsborough County, New Hampshire deeds he found, dated 1812, the distribution of the estate of Ezekiel Carr among his children: John and Molly (Carr) Maxfield, Asahel and Hannah Carr, Stephen and Betty (Carr) Clough, all of Weare, New Hampshire. Each received $5.00 from the estate. Ezekiel C. Maxfield and Polly Maxfield signed as witnesses.[5] This, combined with the suggestion that Ezekiel could have been the male child under ten in the John Maxfield household in 1800, point to the probability that Ezekiel is the child of John and Molly. Ezekiel's daughter, Mary, reported in the 1880 census that her father was born in Vermont. However, as many years had passed, and Ezekiel died when Mary was young, it could be in error. There is no record of Ezekiel's parents ever living anywhere except Weare, New Hampshire. The marriage record of Ezekiel and Elvira stated that he resided at Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont. Ezekiel Maxfield was "warned out" of Waterbury on 27 January 1815.[6] That is, the Town declared that as a new person entering the community who had no visible means of support, the Town declared that they would not take responsibility for him if he became indigent. Ezekiel and Elvira had one child, Mary. As Exekiel does not appear in the 1820 census, and his parents have in their household a girl under ten that could be Mary, the assumption is that Ezekiel had died and his daughter was with his parents.
Ezekiel C. Maxfield and his wife Elvira Rand had the following child:
