GEORGE WASHINGTON5 MAXFIELD (Richard4, Joseph3-2, John1) was born at Bradford, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, about 1806/7 a son of Richard Maxfield and his wife Sally Young.[1] He died at Hyde Park, Lamoille County, Vermont, on 5 June 1877.[2] He married SARAH JANE (JONES) TUTTLE. She was born at Johnson, Washington County (later Lamoille County), on 21 April 1806,[3] a child of Josiah and Jane Jones. She died at Hyde Park on 7 December 1901.[4] This was her second marriage; she had previously married at Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont, on 29 August 1827 THOMAS R. TUTTLE Jr.[5]
George Maxfield grew up at Bradford, where he remained with his father on the farm probably through 1840, as that year's census suggested his presence. The births of all his children, beginning in 1842, were recorded at Hyde Park; so it is likely he married and settled there between 1840 and 1842. George was a farmer.
Sarah (Jones) (Tuttle) Maxfield had three children by her first husband. The youngest of the three remained in the Maxfield household and was described by census takers as "idiotic." The 1850 census described the family as:[6]
| Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | Birthplace | Other |

In 1860 the family consisted of George Maxfield, 52, farmer, Sarah, 53, William, 15, Mary, 12, and Freeman Tuttle, 25.[7] Daughter Sarah had married in 1859.
The 1870 census noted that the George W. Maxfield family related to the Cadys Fall Post Office in the Town of Hyde Park. The family consisted of George, 64, farmer, Sarah, 64, keeping house, William, 24, tinsmith, and Freeman Tuttle, 37, idiotic.[8] Daughter Mary had married in 1868.
George W. Maxfield was hurt by the fall of a tree and died 5 June 1877. He is buried at North Hyde Park Cemetery.[9]
In 1880 widow Sarah Maxfield and her idiotic son were living with her widowed daughter Sarah Manning, and the Manning children, at Eden, Lamoille County, Vermont:[10]
