DAVID5 MAXFIELD (David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born probably at New Hampshire say 1768 a son of David Maxfield and his wife Judith Clough. He died at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, before 18 April 1796 (probate). He married before 1791 ANNE ________. She was born before 1755, and was still living on 1 July 1801. He is often called David Maxfield, Junior.
David Maxfield was born before 1775, according to the 1791 Census. He is listed as the second son in the Family Tree of Frederick Gilmore Maxfield,[1] and William, born about 1763, is generally treated as the first son. So 1768 is an approximation. His parents were still in New Hampshire, settling at Wentworth, Grafton County, New Hampshire, in 1770. The 1791 census reported the David Maxfield household with two females, probably his wife and first child. So they were married by 1791, probably a year or two before that, Anne (________) Maxfield was born before 1755 acording to the 1800 Census. The last reference I have found to her is in the division of her late husband's estate on 1 July 1801.
In his brief life David Maxfield, Jr., participated in several property transactions in the new settlements of Fairfax and Georgia, in northwestern Vermont. Reported in Fairfax in the 1791 Census, he soon purchased land in the adjoining town of Georgia, and sold his interest in land in Fairfax:
David Maxfield died some time before 18 April 1796, when his widow Anne Maxfield and Benedict Alford were appointed administrators of his estate. The inventory of 3 June valued his estate at £ 154 10s, including 100 acres of wild land, 22 acres of improved land, cattle and hogs. On 3 June debts of the estate were paid to fifteen persons, including David Maxfield, Sr., and Jacob Maxfield. The estate was devided among the heirs, and the court authorized the division on 1 July 1801. The widow received her dower, and the remainder was divided among three daughters, Betsey, Polly and Anthea.[7]
The 1791 census reported David Maxfield at Fairfax, heading a household of one male over 16, one male under 16, and two females.[8] I have not identified the male under 16. The 1800 census reported Anne Maxfield head of a household in Georgia, consisting of a female over 45, a male over 45, a male between 10 and 15, and five girls under 10.[9] In addition to herself and her three daughters, Anne must have had some other persons helping her with the farm.
David and Anne Maxfield had the following children:
