EBENEZER HATHAWAY⁵ MAXFIELD (Abraham⁴¹, John³, Timothy², John¹) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 27 January 1793^[1] a son of Abraham Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth Hathaway. He died sometime before 1820, when his wife was recorded as head of household. He published at Dartmouth on 28 May 1814 his intention to marry SARAH TUCKER.^[2] She was born at Dartmouth on 8 January 1793, a daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Tucker.^[3]

The details of Ebenezer's life pass rapidly in a short period of time. Married probably in 1814, he departed on a whaling ship in May of 1817. Their only child was born in February 1818. In August of 1820 the census recorded his wife as head of household, he presumably having died.

Ebenezer H. Maxfield, 23, of Dartmouth, set sail on the Mary for Patagonia on 20 May 1817. He was a seaman and carpenter, described as dark complexioned, 5' 11" tall.^[4]

The 1820 census reported a household headed by Sally Maxfield at Dartmouth, consisting of a woman between 16 and 25 and one boy and two girls under ten.^[5] Sarah "Sally" Maxfield would have been 27, her daughter Eunice, 2, the other children are unidentified.

Daughter Eunice B. Maxfield was called Eunice Miller in her uncle Isaac's will of 1856. Her husband, David Miller, carriage maker, was born at Rehoboth, Bristol County, in 1818. He married Nancy Barney at Rehoboth on 20 August 1845.^[6] She died at Seekonk, Bristol County, on 26 December 1850.^[7] David and Eunice Miller resided at Westport, Bristol County, at the time of the 1870 census, with children Harriet, 24, and Henry, 17.^[8] Harriet would have been born to David and his first wife. If Henry was a child of David and Eunice, they probably married by 1852.

Ebenezer Hathaway Maxfield and his wife Sarah Tucker had the following child:

1. EUNICE B.⁶ MAXFIELD b. at Dartmouth on 15 February 1818; d. at Dartmouth on 25 February 1897;^[9] m. prob. bef. 1852 DAVID M. MILLER, b. at Rehoboth on 5 May 1818, d. at Dartmouth on 17 February 1903, child of Aaron Miller and Susan Maker.^[10]
