AMOS4 MAXFIELD (perhaps Joseph3, Joseph2, John1) was born probably between 1774 and 1784 perhaps at Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire possibly a son of Joseph and Love Maxfield. He died before his estate was reported at probate court at Hillsborough County, on 25 March 1816. He married at Henniker, Hillsborough County, on 15 November 1804 ELEANOR CLOUGH.[1] She married as her second husband at Henniker on 27 March 1817 WILLIAM HENRY.[2]
Harry Dana French speculated that Amos Maxfield was "probably" a child of Joseph and Love Maxfield.[3] The evidence is sketchy at best. The 1800 census reported that the Joseph Maxfield household at Weare included a male between 16 and 25, not otherwise accounted for, who could be this Amos. He was reported coming from Weare in his 1804 marriage record.
Eleanor Maxfield of Bradford, Hillsborough County, widow of Amos Maxfield late of Bradford, yeoman, was granted administration of his estate on 25 March 1816.[4] The inventory, submitted two days later, totalled $85.13, with no real estate.[5] Eleanor reported to the probate court on 1 June 1816:
that the said estate is insolvent, and that the said deceased left her, the said Eleanor his widow, in very low and indigent circumstances; and that the whole estate will be consumed in expenses, if administered upon in the common course; Wherefore she prays, that she, paying the expenses of the funeral of the said deceased, the charges of his last sickness, and the expense of administration thus far, the residue of said estate may be granted to her, for the support of life .[6]Her request was granted.
Widow Eleanor Maxfield remarried within the year.
Amos Maxfield and his wife Eleanor Clough had the following child:
