CHARLES WESLEY7 MAXFIELD (Samuel6, probably Ichabod5) was born in Tyringham, Massachusetts, on 3 April, 1850, a son of Samuel Maxfield and his wife Jeanette Lerna (VR MA 42:54:6), recorded as follows:
Tyringham, Apr 3, 1850: Westley Maxfield, male, b. Tyringham to Samuel and Jenett Maxfield of Tyringham, he farmer b. Columbia Co., NY, she b. Washington
He married ELLEN McCULLOUGH some time after the 1870 census and before the birth of their first child in 1872. She was born at Lee, Massachusetts, about 1847 (death record, 1880 census).

Wesley and Ellen Maxfield had children born at Tyringham, Massachusetts, in 1872, 1874, and 1875; all of the birth records give Wesley's occupation as laborer.

What happened next to Wesley and Ellen is confused. Ellen was living at the State Almshouse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, when their child died in 1879, at the 1880 census, and at the birth of children in 1880 and 1882. These children are recorded as the children of Wesley and Ellen. However Wesley resided with his parents at Meriden, Connecticut in 1880. He remarried, and they had their first child in 1882. At the 1900 census they claimed to have been married twenty years, which would place their marriage about 1879/80. I would interpret this data as follows: Wesley and Ellen must have separated by 1879, when she was in the almshouse. He was not remarried at the time of the 1880 census, but some time before 1882. More research needs to be done, perhaps in almshouse records.

Ellen McCullough Maxfield was reported at the State Almshouse in Tewksbury in the 1880 census (539:503A) with her four month old son Charles. She died in a railroad accident at Palmer, Massachusetts, on 24 September 1892 (VR Palmer Deaths 65:94):

September 24, 1892. Nellie Maxfield, married, age 45 years, died in railroad accident; residence: State Primary School, Monson; occupation: state pauper; d. Palmer; b. Lee; parents unknown; bur: S. P. School burial ground
Charles Wesley Maxfield married as his second wife JENNIE J. CURTIS. She was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, on June, 1861 (date from 1900 census, place from death records of children; some records give her birth place as Saint Louis, Missouri). Birth, death and census records locate this family at Meriden, Connecticut (1882, 1884), Clinton, Connecticut (1887), Boston, Massachusetts (1888, 1892), Mendon, Massachusetts (1894), Blackstone, Massachusetts (1896, 1897, 1900), and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1906, 1920). His occupation is given as slater (1887), farmer (1896, 1900), farm laborer (1900), and construction helper (1920).

Jennie (Curtis) Maxfield died at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 4 July 1906 (WI D). Charles Wesley Maxfield was still living in the 1920 census (1998:2B), at Milwaukee, in the home of his daughter, Laura Richter.
