Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

DAVID7 MAXFIELD (perhaps Isaac6, David5, probably Eliphalet4, Nathaniel3, John2-1) was born at Vermont about 1803/4 (1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses), and according to the 1880 census his parents were born at Vermont. He resided at Saint Lawrence County, New York, in the 1830 and 1850 censuses. All of this points to an origin with the Maxfields of Franklin and Chittenden Counties, Vermont. In other words, he is probably a grandson of David Maxfield (born 1741). But which of that David's sons is his father? This leaves Isaac and Obadiah. Both had male children under 10 in the 1810 census, not otherwise accounted for. In 1820 all of the males in Obadiah's household can be accounted for. Isaac reported four males between 10 and 16; only one can be clearly identified. Therefore I speculate that David is perhaps a child of Isaac Maxfield and his wife Phebe Hill. It is NOT PROVEN. The second possibility would be that David was a son of Obadiah, who was living with his uncle Moses in 1820.

Daivd Maxfield married LOUISA SANFORD probably some time before the birth of their first child in 1829/30 and the 1830 census. Louisa was born at New York about 1803/4 (census records). Her name is variously written Lovica or Lavisa.

The 1830 census (107:219) reported the David Maxfield family at Gouvernour, Saint Lawrence County, New York, consisting of a man and a woman between the ages of 20 and 29, and a male child under 5.

The 1850 census (589:58B) reported this family at Macomb Town, Saint Lawrence County:

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
Daniel Maxfield 46 M laborer VT
Levica Maxfield 45 F VT
William Maxfield 20 M laborer NY
Mary Maxfield 14 F NY school
Sally M. Maxfield 10 F NY school
Elizabeth Maxfield 5 F NY

Although the census taker recorded the name of the head of household as "Daniel," all of the family data corresponds to our David.

By 1860 (census 1429:940) the family had moved to the Town of Richmond, Showano County, Wisconsin, where the David Maxfield household was recorded by the census taker immediately before William and Sally Maxfield:

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace Other
David Maxfield 56 M farmer $450 $275 VT
Lovica Maxfield 56 F NY

The 1870 census (1739:352B) recorded the family at the same town, consisting of David, 66, a farmer, Levisa, 66, and Sarah, 27.

The 1880 census (1447:399C) reported them at the same Town, living with their daughter and son-in-law:

Name Related MS Sex Race Age B Occupation FB MB
James Whitehouse self M M W 47 NY farmer NH NY
Mary Whitehouse wife M F W 41 NY keeps house VT VT
James Whitehouse son S M W 20 WI river man NY NY
Morris Whitehouse son S M W 17 WI at school NY NY
Sidney Maxfield son S M W 12 WI at school NY NY
David Maxfield father-in-law M M W 76 VT at home VT VT
Louisa Maxfield mother-in-law M F W 76 NY at home VT VT

Perhaps the surname of Maxfield for Sidney is a mistake.

Lavisa Maxfield died at Richmond on 2 June 1881 (Ziereis), as reported in the Showano County Journal for 10 June 1881. She was described as 77 years old, widow of D. Maxfield. David Maxfield died in 1888 (Woodlawn Cem).
