JOHN H.8 MAXFIELD (John7, perhaps Daniel6, probably Daniel5,4, Ebenezer3, Samuel2, Clement1), a child of John Maxfield and his wife Nancy Drowne, was born before his grandfather wrote his will in 1826 (RI GR 4:35). This could possibly be the same John H. Maxfield who appeared in the 1850 Census at Smithfield, Rhode Island. However, I do not have proof that it is the same person. The estimated birth dates, and the same middle initial, point in that direction. I welcome any further information that either supports or discredits this identification.
John H. Maxfield was born in Rhode Island about 1821/2, according to the 1850 Census. He married AMEY A., probably before 1846. The young family of John and Amey Maxfield was reported in the 1850 Census in Smithfield, Rhode Island (1850 Census, RI, Providence Co., 129) as follows:
|John H. Maxfield||28||M||laborer||RI|
|Amey A. Maxfield||24||F||RI|
This John H. Maxfield could possibly be the John Maxfield who married MARY ELIZABETH GREGORY at Whiteside County, Illinois, on 10 March 1864 (IL M). This is the same county in which John's brothers Nathaniel and Albert settled, and subsequent censuses reported John's birth state as Rhode Island. Mary Gregory was born in New York about 1837/8 (1880 census).
The 1880 census (258:157C) reported this family at Lyndon, Whiteside County, New York:

|Mary E. Maxfield||wife||M||F||W||42||NY||keeping house||CT||England|

|Gifford D. Maxfield||son||S||M||W||7||IL||RI||NY|
|Mira A. Maxfield||daughter||S||F||W||1||IL||RI||NY|
John Maxfield and his first wife Amey had the following child:
