MARYb GOCHENAUER (Johna) remains a riddle. She had three children who bore the surname of Martin. She was sometimes called single, and sometimes called widow. The identity of the father of her children, and her relationship to him, continues to be a mystery.

Mary Gochenauer was born in Pennsylvania on 10 March 1836 (Pa Deaths 4411:1; on 6 March according to grave marker). Her parents were John Gochenauer and his wife Lydia Elliot (Pa Deaths 4411:1). In the 1860 Census, Mary, age 24, was living with her parents in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her son Albert Martin was living nearby with her sister Keziah Eckman, although he could also be the "Alphred" in the household with Mary. The child Franklin, age 3, living in the same household as Mary, could have been her son.

When Mary signed daughter Ada's wedding license in 1887, she stated, "father is deceased."

Mary's great-granddaughter, Mary Leora (Martin) Duke, who was born in 1906, recalled in 1984, "I remember his [Albert Martin's] mother visited us several times and we called her Grandma Gochenauer."

Mary Gochenauer died at the home of her daughter, Ada Herr, in Lampeter, Pennsylvania, on 11 January 1916 (Pa Deaths 4411:1; obituary below; grave marker). She died of apoplexy. Her death record presented her as single; her obituary called her "Mrs." and listed her three children. For her full obituary, see below. Mary Gochenauer was buried at Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery.
